Whether it's a balcony, garden or patio, the perfect outdoor space isn't complete without complementary lighting. But what should you be looking for?

First and foremost, you need to pay attention to IP ratings. So what are they?

IP stands for Ingress Protection, which is basically the measure of how well a lamp is protected against both particles and water. The number (or rating) attributed to a lamp tells us everything we need to know about whether or not it's suitable to be used outside in the elements.

The IP rating is split into two part - the first digit relates to the ingress of particles and ranges from 0 (no protection) to 6 (dust-tight). The second refers to the ingress of moisture and ranges from 0 (no protection) to 8 (protection from complete submersion under pressure).

IP Ratings of IP44 or above will be suitable for splash proof outdoor lighting, whilst IP ratings IP65+ will provide the best protection against water.

Do I need an electrician to install my outside lighting?

It's important to remember that when installing exterior lighting, all wiring must be weather protected and all metalwork should be earthed, so in most circumstances we do recommend at least consulting your own electrician prior to installing outdoor lighting. In ideal scenarios, light switches will be located indoors.

Are portable lamps suitable for use as outdoor lighting?

We love portable lamps because they allow us the freedom and versatility to control ambience in all spaces around the home. Portable, battery powered lamps such as the HAY PC lamp (IP43), &Tradition Lucca (IP44), Menu Carrie Lamp (IP20) and Flos Bonjour Unplugged (IP20) are perfect for bringing outside on dry evenings but don’t forget to bring them inside if it rains and at the end of the day.

Outdoor Lighting Design

Deciding on which lamps to invest in for outside is much the same as the approach you'd take to indoor lighting. Firstly, you need to decide on what the needs of your space are. Is the goal of your lighting to provide ambience, decoration or to assist with a task?

The Louis Poulsen Flindt Garden Bollard Lamp is a wonderful example of a task lamp that also helps with the overall ambience of a space. Use on your driveway, a garden path or surrounding a gathering area to light up potential outdoor hazards and creating a relaxing environment.

Ambient lighting that provides an evenly lit, comfortable light to a space is essential for outdoor dining. If this is the intended use of your space, thinking about investing in a combination of pendant, floor and wall lights.

Some of our favourites include the Flos Captain Flint Outdoor Floor Lamp, Louis Poulsen 3-2½ Outdoor Wall Light and Foscarini Aplomb Pendant Light.
